  • About the Edition

New models for dislocation structure and motion are presented for nanocrystals, nucleation at grain boundaries, shocked crystals, interphase interfaces, quasicrystals, complex structures with non-planar dislocation cores, and colloidal crystals. A theory for the magnetoplastic effect explains many diverse results of this type. The model has many potential applications for forming processes influenced by magnetic fields. Dislocation model for the magnetoplastic effect New mechanism for dislocation nucleation and motion in nanocrystals New models for the dislocation structure of interfaces between crystals with differing crystallographic structure A unified view of dislocations in quasicrystals, with a new model for dislocation motion A general model of dislocation behavior in crystals with non-planar dislocation cores Dislocation properties at high velocities Dislocations in colloidal crystals.

significant effect on the formation of dislocations and thereby on the properties of solids. The first two chapters of the book present an overview of dislocations. The crystal structures and the various defects and dislocations are discussed, and methods of observation and diagnosis of dislocations are covered. Contrary to the geometrically motivated nonlinear theory of dislocations continuously distributed over the body, nonlinear analysis of isolated dislocations and disclinations is less developed; it is given for the first time in this book, and in a form accessible to both students and researchers.

Chapter 7 Dislocations The Onset of Permanent Deformation 1 Dislocations 2 The Edge Dislocation 2 The Screw Dislocation 3 The Burgers Vector 3 threshold for permanent deformation in solids and experimental observation. In common with a few other scientific phenomena, dislocations were conceived many years before. This area is called the dislocation. The book emphasizes the growing interest in relating dislocation theoretic concepts to engineering problems. Topic areas chosen ranged from the fundamental, such as properties of single dislocations, to the more applied, such as fracture. The papers are grouped .

- How do defects affect material properties. - Are all defects undesirable. The movement of mobile dislocations allow atoms to slide over each other at low stress levels and is known as glide or slip.

The movement of dislocations may be enhanced or hindered by the presence other elements within the crystal and that may diffuse to the dislocation forming a Cottrell atmosphere. - Dislocations in Solids, Volume a Tribute to F R N Nabarro.

The three chapters also discuss the mechanical properties of dislocations. The remaining chapters offer a detailed discussion of the mechanisms of dislocations and the mechanical strength of crystalline solids.
